Endangered Species

Here's a list of some of the many endangered species

1.  Mountain gorillas

Mountain gorillas are a subspecies of the eastern gorilla, and are one of the most endangered primate species in the world. They are native to the forests of the Virunga Volcanoes, located in the countries of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

They are threatened by habitat loss, poaching, and disease, and there are currently only an estimated 1,063 mountain gorillas left in the wild. Conservation efforts are being implemented to protect and increase their population, including the establishment of protected areas and anti-poaching measures.

2.  Rhinos

There are 5 species of rhinoceros, including the white, black, Indian, Javan, and Sumatran. These large, herbivorous animals are known for their thick skin and distinctive horns. Rhinoceroses are typically found in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, savannas, and rainforests.

Unfortunately, rhinoceroses are facing numerous threats, including habitat loss, poaching, and conflict with humans. As a result, all five species are considered endangered or critically endangered. Conservation efforts are being implemented to protect these animals and their habitats, but their future remains uncertain.

3.  Elephants

Elephants are large, intelligent mammals native to Africa and Asia, known for their long trunks, tusks, and large ears as well as for their strong memories and social behavior.

There are 3 species: African, Asian, and forest elephants, with African elephants being the largest and forest elephants the smallest. All 3 species are endangered due to habitat loss and poaching.

4.  Zebras

Known for their distinctive black and white striped coats, there are 3 species of zebras: the plains zebra, the mountain zebra, and the Grévy's zebra, all native to Africa.

Zebras are a "keystone species" in their ecosystems as their presence has a ripple effect on the other species that live there. The mountain zebra native to the mountains and savannas of South Africa and Namibia is the most endangered of the 3 species, with an estimated population of less than 10,000 individuals.
